Determining the best motor oil for your car, truck, or C/SUV is as easy as opening your owner’s manual and flipping to the oil section. Your vehicle’s manufacturer will recommend the best type and weight for your engine. This being said, there are times when you might use a different oil type because of special circumstances, such as the vehicle’s age or extreme weather. Guaranteed Auto Air & Repair is going to talk about the four types of motor oil below and the benefits of each one.

1. Conventional

Used for more than a century, conventional motor oil is a lot of people’s go-to oil when they have the oil changed in their automobiles. Conventional oil has been used in automobiles and other machinery for well over 100 years. This oil is perfect for vehicles equipped with standard engines with up to 75,000 miles on them. Conventional motor oil should be changed every 3,000 miles to ensure it’s always viscous and capable of protecting the engine.

2. High-Mileage

You may have noted that we said engines with up to 75,000 miles on them above. Once the odometer turns past 74,999 miles, your engine is considered a high-mileage engine. It is at this point that you may want to consider switching from conventional motor oil to high-mileage motor oil. This is conventional oil with special additives designed to protect older engines better. In fact, high-mileage oil helps your older engine avoid oil leaks.

3. Synthetic

We mentioned extreme weather in the introduction to this blog post, which is something we don’t suffer from here in Florida with the exception of hurricanes and tornadoes. If you live in an area that has extremely hot summers and/or cold winters, you may want to switch to synthetic motor oil during these seasons to protect the engine. Synthetic is manmade oil with additives that are designed to help the oil stand up to extremes, including weather and high-performance engines.

4. Synthetic Blend

Finally, some people prefer to have the best of both worlds so they opt for a synthetic blend in their automobiles. This motor oil is more affordable than synthetic oil but comes with some of the additives found in synthetic oil. A synthetic blend works well in any engine with the exception of high-performance engines that call for synthetic oil.
